As I understand it, it happened suddenly, unexpectedly, without any warning to the BC staff - at least the overload to the servers did - and they made an emergency decision to close the forums temporarily, while leaving them open to the 1300 or so winged members.
This Yahoo email discussion may help take some of the load off the servers, esp. if more people used it. Viewing the forum posts in Expanded form would help, too, as it's opening each page that taxes the servers. I've been told that making posts is no more taxing than reading them.
