I've mailed books to India, as well as to many other countries. Sometimes surface can take up to two months... something to consider is the global priority envelopes... they are a flat rate and are good to most countries. Cheaper than airmail... I mail stuff (non- books) all over the world, and none of my packages have hit a black hole...
