Thanks, Karry. You just reminded me of another childhood favorite - 
Two on an Island. (I forget the author.) Two kids and a dog are 
stranded on an island in the middle of a large lake, and have to 
figure out how to survive until rescue arrives.

Marguerite Henry's books are good, too. Also, if she enjoys those, 
the Walter Farley books should do her heart glad.

Island of the Blue Dolphins is another one I enjoyed as a youngster.
