I have seen it both ways; with a little experimenting, I've figured out 
the pattern:

* The BCID only (without journal/) works IF I include the whole number, 
with prefix: http://www.bookcrossing.com/139-4734605 -- it opens 
directly to *making* a journal entry.

* Including "journal," with just the last seven digits of the BCID, 
opens on a *display* of all the journal entries: 
http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/4734605

http://www.bookcrossing.com/4734605 doesn't work at all.   Sorry!  I'm 
learning! :D
