This was a great reading month for me! Out of the ten books I've listed, I had only one I didn't finish (and rated a 1/5 - Catch 22). Half the books I read I rated a 5 out of 5. I found three new authors I love and will read again: Adichie, Zusak, and Cisneros. My average rating for the month was a 4.1 (on a 5 point scale).
Wendy 1. Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen Rated: 5/5 A wonderful story about love and marriage...and the barriers to them! Lizzy is a character who one cannot help but fall in love with. Highly recommended read. 2. Half A Yellow Sun, by Chimamnda Ngozi Adichie Rated: 5/5 I loved this book...I highly recommend it! You can find my review on my blog:(http://caribousmom.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2007/1/7/2630202.html) 3. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai Sijie Rated: 3.5/5 Read for: TBR Challenge I had mixed feelings about this one. Read my review of this book on my blog: http://caribousmom.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2007/1/8/2632781.html 4. Catch 22, by Joseph Heller Rated: 1/5 DNF - Did not finish this one...I hated it. The dialogue is circular, nonsensical and repetitive; the writing is crappy (filled with adverbs and adjectives). I know it is satire and supposed to be humorous; but I longed for some action, any action, any plot at all that would pull me in. I rarely do not finish a book...I hung in on this one through 70 pages simply because it is touted as a classic must read by so many people. But, ultimately I decided I didn't want to waste my time any longer. 5. The Color Purple, by Alice Walker Rated: 4.75/5 I loved this book. Heartbreaking, poignant tale. You can read my review of it on my blog: http://caribousmom.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2007/1/12/2644979.html 6. The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck Rated: 5/5 Awesome book...A true American Classic. You can read my review of it on my blog: http://caribousmom.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2007/1/19/2665019.html 7. The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros Rated: 4.5/5 A beautiful novel made up of numerous vignettes from the POV of a young girl growing up in the Latino section of Chicago. Some beautiful, poetic writing in this little gem. See my review at: http://caribousmom.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2007/1/19/2665722.html 8. The Maze, by Catherine Coulter Rated: 2.5/5 Head hopping, information dumping, plot holes I could drive my car through (especially when it came to law enforcement protocols)...this one was not the greatest. On the plus side, the sex scenes were good *laughs* and it was fast paced. The ending was not believeable in the least. Can't recommend this one. 9. Purple Hibiscus, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Rated: 5/5 A poignant, beautifully written story about a young Nigerian girl growing up amid domestic violence, religious extremism and political unrest. Highly recommended. See my review at: http://caribousmom.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2007/1/24/2679460.html 10.The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak Rated: 5/5 An amazing, tragic novel which I highly recommended.
