Doesn't seem to be a scam; here's an article from a Brattleboro

The double-post to this group and the long list of other email 
recipients (though those apparently only appear to folks who receive 
these posts by email) are message-board faux pas, and an [OT] in the 
subject line would have helped notify people that the post was not 
about books or BookCrossing, but other than that it wasn't out of line.
