Short answer: no. That's mainly because BookCrossing was not set up
to be a trading site in which people would need such a search
function. Even the "available" status code does not necessarily mean
that the book is available for trade, only that whoever had it last
wanted to mark it as available for some purpose of their own, be it
trading, wild-releasing, or just "other than reserved, traveling, to
be read, or a keeper".
The site does have a Book Wishlist forum in which people can post
requests for trades, or requests to be contacted by any BCers near
them who are interested in local trading. And you can check the
Conventions and Meetups forum to see if there are any meetings in
your area - or try to set one up yourself if you like; just announce
a time and place, perhaps try sending PMs to some of the BCers in
your area to invite them specifically, bring along some books to
trade - and to read while waiting in case nobody shows up {wry grin} -
and see what happens!
You *can* look for books in your general area by checking
the "hunting" pages, though; this won't let you search by specific
title, but will show you the places where people have released books,
and you can drill down to the actual lists of titles and see if any
of them appeal to you enough to be worth hunting for. [You can also
subscribe to release-alert emails for specific towns; release-alert
emails are sent out when the release notes are made, whether the
book's already been released or is to be released in future, so in
some cases the release-alerts can give you advance notice of releases
and you can try to be on the spot!]
Wild-book hunting is never guaranteed, of course; people may not be
able to leave the books at the exact time and place stated, or may
not be able to (or choose to) specify an exact time or place at all.
And there's always the chance that someone else has nabbed the book
or moved it somewhere by the time you get to the location. But it can
be fun trying to hunt for books, and if you find one it's an extra
thrill...
You can also look for OBCZs near you, as those usually (though not
always) have more books on hand at any given time. You can find more
information about OBCZs (and about book-status codes, and other
things) in the BookCrossing FAQ ( http://www.bookcrossing.com/faqs );
the OBCZ entry in the "Terminology" section also has a link to BCer
Netstation's OBCZ-finder map.
Hope that helps!
