Unabridged = the whole thing
Abridged = only part of it 

I don't see the point of abridged books, even abridgements approved by the 
author. However, I do end up acquiring a bunch of them through boxes/gifts and 
I usually put up with them if I don't care about the book so much. I certainly 
prefer the whole, unabridged version of audio books, though.
