Bummer. Surely there is a problem with your remote (or your batteries), don't look for a cause in 7.9. You don't get repeat even with the remote at very close range? Are you sure your new battery works? Perhaps you can you look at the IR emitter of the remote through the viewfinder of a digital camera and check you see the LED blink?
Also, with no other justifiable cause, you could reboot the Boom.
