Over time, reluctant wifi reconnecting behavior (when moved, when router
rebooted, etc) became no wifi reconnecting at all. Wifi function
declared dead, I couldn't get it to connect.

"External wifi antennae" used to be made by many co's and were easy to
find. Not so much now. Needed one with that was small and hide-able
behind the Boom itself. Many products tout themselves as being "bridges"
but the ones I found were wifi extenders and I didn't want that
happening. I have an Orbi system that works great and I didn't want to
crowd the airwaves with unneeded added traffic. Yes, I know most old
routers can be configured to be wifi antennae (bridges) but they're not
small and I discard them when I buy a new one.

I found the Iogear ethernet to wifi product. It's about 3 inches by 1
inch and is a simple external wifi antenna. Setup was easy. It has two
connections, a USB cable to a small wall wart for power and an ethernet
cable to the Boom. Reconfigured the Boom's network connection to wired
and that was it. It works great and my Boom is back to normal
functioning.
