I've read your post with interest. It would be great to discuss some of these
things face to face. I completely agree with you about the value of tools and
infrastructure. FWIW, I've never got the hang of Boost Jam :-(

I also think your specific suggestions re- QuickBook are good and see nothing in
the work I'm doing (now, slowly) which isn't taking the tool in the direction
you suggest.
