If you have a fix, I think you should fix it, unless someone else
complains. I don't see any reason why not. It's a bug.

For the record, the patch explicitly sets "preserve-space" inside
programlisting elements. I later found that docbook uses the same
strategy, except that it preserves whitespace everywhere, and singles
out specific elements in a "strip-space" element.
