I don't buy it.  There's no punctuation or space surrounding those *s,
so they shouldn't be bold.

I don't know what you mean.

The problem is that it interacts badly with line wrapping.  If I start
some bold text and then my line gets long or my paragraph gets
reflowed, I can easily end up with a newline in my simple markup,
breaking something that used to work.
