Maybe I'm missing something here, but I thought a simple way to cope with this was to post a message on the list asking for people who did commits in the last 3 days. Out of my head, John Maddock is a likely candidate. Even if we don't find a person who checked out a fresh copy of the whole repository still the "union" of all the commits should give the right state (because each people has the newest version of the specific files he committed).
