I can only agree that it is of utter importance that the bar is open. As
most of us stay in this hotel, its of no use to have alternatives in
Aspen, which is a 25 minute walk away...
Maybe we can have a parallel bar event, so that people in the evening
can choose where to go.
Something like the break meetings at Meeting C++ for socializing, kind
of like a meetup in the evening.

From what I've seen, there are dozens of people at the bar every night
that there's a bartender. Sometimes, as when there's an evening
session, very few people show up until 9:30 or 10, but then there are
dozens like always. If they show up and there's no bartender, most of
them leave. On nights with an earlier start, people tend also to
leave when the bartender does. When the bartender stays late, I think
it usually thins out around 1am or so. In all cases, there are
stragglers until 3am or 4am. Often they are named Tony (or T-Dog).

Matthew,
Thanks very much for the phone call and for agreeing to help at
C++Now.
To recap our conversation, our two goals are:
·Better communication between us and the hotel about our needs
regarding hotel bar staffing and our socializing requirements
(hours and numbers)
·Considering alternative after-hours activities such as a pub-quiz
or trivial contest.
As I said, we’ve run into the issue that hotel will see that there
aren’t many people around at 9:00 PM, so they’ll tell the
bartender to close the bar at 10:30 and head home. Then, after the
Lightning Talk session ends at 10 PM, a crowd goes to the bar only
to find that it is about to close. We need to do a better job of
letting the hotel know what to expect so that they can do a better
job of serving us. They don’t want to close the bar when they have
paying customers, but they need to be able to plan a little in
advance.
I wish that I was a better resource for leaning about how many
people are in the bar in the evening, how early they arrive, and
how late they stay up, but, as I mentioned, I only occasionally
drop by the bar after the evening session and I usually don’t stay
long.
I’ve CC’ed the planning the committee email and the emails of
several individuals that I know have attended a few years with the
hope that they chime in with their thoughts on how many people we
usually have at the bar, on what nights, and for how long.
One thing to remember is that this year, we’ll be shifted back one
day. Since we are not after Mother’s Day, we’ll have the reception
on Sunday evening and run session Monday through Friday.
Thanks again for your help taking this on.
Jon
