palms can be synced on unix boxes with a serial port with
pilotmanager. it is not too actively developed but it works on my suns.

well, pilotmanager IS written in pure perl. :)
i don't know how much work it would take to make it work over usb. i
would guess not too much if you can figure out how to address the palm
via usb.
