Hi,
This is way off-topic, but (having run it by Ron) I thought some on
the list might be interested and it's for a good cause. If you have old
computers to get rid of, please read on...
     Thanks, Jan Jackson

Subject: Retire old computers to Africa 2/28

These people are looking for functional mac/ibm however-old computers,
and will pick them up. Something to keep in mind if you have a lot of
old machines that no one seems to want. I know that there have been a
lot of us looking for an organization like this.

Pick Up of Surplus Computers for Africa - FEBRUARY 28, 2002

The Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and
Policy is working with Planet Aid to pick up surplus computer systems at
no cost that will be used at schools and projects in Africa in order to
strengthen sustainable development. Their aim is to secure 25,000
computers over the next two years. They will also plan to purchase
approximately 2,500. They have already picked up the first 1,000
computers.

Please join with us to participate in this important opportunity for the
Tufts community. To quote the folks from Planet Aid, "We must, as part
of the industrialized world - as well as the developing world - help
stabilize the situation in the world, for development to take place.
Terrorism and despair in developing countries are interlinked.
Investing in education and food programmes in developing countries will
help get rid of breeding grounds for terrorists. We in the
industrialized world have a big responsibility here, in setting an
example for the world to follow. Computers to Africa is an excellent
way of doing our share."

To participate, please send an email to Dave Hastings, the project
coordinator ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) detailing the information as
follows:

Location and number of computers (Yes! We will pick them up from you!!)

Hard disk size
MHz speed of the CPU
amount of Ram
approximate age
presence/absence of a network card
monitor size

All functioning computers (mac/ibm) are acceptable, regardless of age or
speed. If any files or software are present, the Planet Aid folks
guarantee in writing that they will all be removed and cleaned.

The University has sanctioned this pick-up of computers, and signed an
agreement with Planet Aid that allows for the removal of these computer
systems with no risk to Tufts.
