What makes it worse is the ones you do see are really high profile,
so it seems better somehow. (The perl community's got a bunch, but so
does any community)
Generally I'll agree with Elaine--folks with formal training produce
better code on average than the self taught. Some still suck, and
some of the wunderkind will get you good code, but counting on the
brilliant isn't a great way to go.
