[Boston.pm] OT: hard drive recovery strategies?

My friend lost a hard drive, and is trying to figure out the best way to attempt to recover the data. Can anyone recommend resources for this that have worked for them? Either software/hardware tools for data recovery, or shops in the Boston area that are good?

My friend is a grad student, and is pretty tech savvy ( despite slacking on backups, of course.)
