As far as I know, each of the times Damian did a talk for Boston.pm, it
was because he was in town to teach classes. Maybe someone can organize
something similar in the Orange County area.
I don't know SoCal geography all that well, but I'm guessing that with the
right promotion, you may be able to come for the class from San Diego, Los
Angeles, etc -- at least, from a glance at Mapquest and an assumption that
those are the closest major cities within a hundred miles or so.
I know people have come to the Boston classes from as far away as South
Carolina, and maybe farther, so it's not out of the question.
The trick would probably be to seek out companies & industries in that
part of the country that are using Perl, and find out if those companies
would be interested in sending any of their employees for Perl training.

(By way of comparison, there's exactly 1 such opening in Mass right now;
assuming that the jobs page is a reasonable indicator in the first place.)
Maybe your fellow Orange County PM folks -- and other relevant groups
listed at <http://www.pm.org/groups/north_america.html> -- might be able
to help organize something.
Come to that, <http://www.pm.org/invite/index.html> looks relevant.
