FWIW, the MIT on-line campus map (http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg) uses a
<TD> element with a background image specified via an inline style
sheet; the background shows until the requested map image can be
constructed/served/displayed over it.  But that technique might be hard
to apply to textual content, since the space between the glyphs is not
drawn, and therefore wouldn't obscure the background.  (But if you find
a way to make it work, I'd be curious to know how.)
