Yes, I knew the concept before hand.
I even wrote a little haiku about it.

Autovivification
sometimes unwanted

There just seems to be a fair expectation
that 'exists' shall do no harm. That's the
whole point of it. 

If you're simply testing the boolean value
I could see autovivification kicking in,
but damnit, exists is meant to avoid it.

The fact that it only works on the last level
of a hash lookup seems similar to having
surgery to insert an ultrasound probe on
one particular organ so you can passively
look at it.
