My client is a leading mobile music service provider with all the components
needed for a compelling music experience: full track downloads over-the-air
(OTA), direct to the mobile handset, superior sound quality, and over today's
mobile networks. This is hot 'new' space and out of the three companies in it,
they are #1.

Their service features options that enable easy browsing, music previewing,
downloading album art and wallpaper, artist information, featured artists and
master ringtunes.

Additionally, their music player software can be pre-installed or delivered
free of charge (OTA) to mobile phone users. The software utilizes a unique
Integrated Network Monitoring Module that controls the network connection and
re-establishes it automatically if necessary, eliminating problems associated
with dropped connections.

They are backed by top-tier VC's and are experiencing significant success in
the market hence the addition of these NEW positions. This particular opening
is in a 3 person development group.

PERMANENT POSITION - NO VISA SPONSORSHIP - Salary plus stock commensurate with
experience.

Competitive benefits package includes Medical, Dental, 401K, Life, STD, LTD,
paid holidays and 3 weeks vacation.

Overview

My client is looking for a new member of the engineering team for their mobile
music server platform. This team makes part of our system that lets users
discover and buy music on their mobile phones. If you want to be challenged by
working in a small, aggressive, fast-paced software development team where you
can have an impact in many areas and if you can keep your cool and have fun
doing all of that then this might be the job for you.

Role

Your role will be to design, implement, and ensure the quality of key
components of their server system. You will provide feedback on architecture
and feature specifications from other groups within the company and partners
and you will help define practices and processes that will make your job easier
and the team more efficient.

Skills

Must be fluent in Perl - have written more than just a few utilities in Perl.

A quick measure of necessary database experience might involve the following:

- You have designed or been intimately involved in working with non-trivial
relational databases. By non-trivial, I mean on the order of 50 tables with
extensive primary and foreign key relationships

- Some tables should have on the order of a few million records

- You've probably had to do some optimization/performance work with careful
indexing design and, for really large systems, some clustering and
load-balancing.

- Bonus points for replicating databases across geographically dispersed
locations.

You'll also work on all the other parts of the server system which include web
stuff, WAP/HTML, system architecture, maybe some J2EE work later, etc.

More on skills...

To be a good fit for their team, you need to be technically versatile, a jack
of all trades. You have a short learning curve and strong, creative analytical
skills. The company requires that you are fluent with Perl (bonus points for
mod_perl) and SQL (points for MySQL) and that you are proficient with Apache,
Linux, and HTML. In addition, you should have some knowledge of WAP/HTTP and
XML. The perfect candidate will also have experience with designing
geographically distributed systems, SOAP, and J2EE. A typical background is a
BSCS or BSEE but equivalent experience may work. For you to be good at all of
this, you've probably been at it for at least 5 years.

To be a good fit for their team, you need to be an excellent communicator,
written and orally. You need to like working with others and be likeable
yourself. But you still need to be someone who can work independently and take
initiative to solve problems on your own.

You need to have a healthy balance between work and personal life but know that
milestones are important and there are times when you need to work hard to
achieve them. To succeed, you must have the ability to focus on several tasks
at once, juggling priorities as needed, and you need to be able to identify
functionality versus schedule tradeoffs under pressure.
