Senior Software Engineer (Unix/Linux Software Developer for Distance Education)
Harvard's Division of Continuing Education Cambridge, MA Salary Grade 58, Full Time Reports to the Software Development Manager for Distance Education. Duties and responsibilities The person in this role will be responsible for the design and implementation of Unix and Linux system software for use in distance education and academic computing within DCE. The emphasis will be on Perl and web development in a large distributed computing environment. Projects will include such things as developing services for the monitoring and reporting of system and software status, implementing secure methods for transfering course materials and lecture videos, and analyzing and optimizing system performance. The person will also actively participate in the design of new distance education systems as well as the testing and debugging of complex software and operational problems. This person will report to the Software Development Manager for Distance Education. Required Education and Experience: A B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering and 3-5 years in Unix/Linux systems programming, particularly related to web applications, databases, and security. Must have extensive experience in Perl, web development, Unix/Linux system programming, relational database development. Candidate must have a commitment to professional software engineering practices including requirements gathering, source code management practices, iterative design, and test. Java experience and Windows programming experience is a plus. The individual must be very detail-oriented, have excellent written and oral communication skills, and must be able to express designs in both written and verbal forms prior to implementation. The successful candidate must be able to work under pressure as part of a team in an integrated software development and operations/production environment.
