How about submitting bug reports that *do* contain code? I've never been paid to do extensive work on a project, but in the course of my work I've found bugs, produced patches to fix said bugs, and then submitted said patches back to the project the code came from. So I've generated code as part of my work, but not enough to really consider myself a participant.
