I whole heartedly agree with your statements on people skills.
Bjarne Stroustrup says similar things on social skill as well.

That is a tough one though. Especially since the path to an
technical or scientific position is typically one that does not lend
itself well to developing those skills.
How to foster development social skills amongst a bunch
of, say, college comp. sci. majors that sacrifice human contact
and sleep for days on end in order to complete their assignments?
Probably impossible, thus such development is often delayed until the
first job
but at that point a conscious effort must be made.
I am grateful that my first job was at a smaller company and I actually
met with clients. My first boss was also quite a mensch.and thus a role
model in that way.
