The fancy term for it was "music concrete", a French term, which refers to
the inclusion of "actual" sounds into music. It was made with lots and
lots of magnetic tape, razor blades and tape.
It was also the 2nd major use of the technique by John Lennon and George
Martin (who did all that splicing together). The 1st being, of course,
"For the Benefit of Mr. Kite" on Sgt. Pepper.
As you say, john, it is a collage of sounds. A close listen to Mr. Kite is
actually pretty amazing.
