hi all,

below is my old (2007!) draft of a letter i want to send to various mit
groups. it needs to be more of a sell and why it would be great
thing. it needs editing to be up to date on previous yapc tracks,
etc. and emphasize how we do all the work and we only need a 'sponsor'
to sign off. tpf backs all expenses and has insurance. 11 years of
successful yapc's is a solid track history. so edit this, rewrite it,
etc. if we get it out in time and land a sponsor, we could send in a
proposal for 2011. or still go for 2012.

go for it.

thanx,

uri

The Boston Perl Mongers are looking to host the 9th annual "Yet Another
Perl Conference" (YAPC) at MIT during June 2007. YAPC
is a low cost, volunteer run conference that attracts speakers and Perl
developers from all over the world and it also a large percentage of its
attendees are students. The conference fees are a low $100 and it has
been drawing over 400 attendees. The rest of the funding is from
commercial sponsors and donations. YAPC has always either broken even
financially or ran a small 'profit' for the Perl Foundation.

Hosting YAPC at MIT feels very fitting to us as MIT was a primary
inventor of the ARPANET and Perl is called the duct tape of the internet.

We are all members of Boston Perl Mongers, the local chapter of the
worldwide Perl user group community. We hold monthly meetings (held at
MIT :) which draw 10-20 members and many of us are either MIT alumni or
staffers.

Here is the schedule of the 2006 YAPC recently held June 26-28 at the
Illinois Institute Of Technology.

These are some of the talk tracks and training offered at previous YAPC

Perl 5

The production-quality version of the language. The most widely used of
the "dynamic languages", Perl5 occupies every niche from integrated
business applications to sysadmin glue scripts.

Bioperl

Perl is a key programming language in the world of biotechnology. The
Bioperl suite and the Human Genome Project's conversion filters are
written in Perl.

Perl 6

The future of Perl, currently under development by the Perl community.
Perl 6 has the goal of providing the expressive power of continuations,
junctions, multimethod dispatch, to a general programming audience,
advancing the state of the art. It will support the needs of both the
practical developer and the academic researcher.

Pugs

Pugs is the development platform for the Perl 6 language. It was
initially developed in Haskell and now has several compiler backend
including ones for Perl 5, Parrot and C. Pugs provides a sandbox where
new Perl 6 syntax and semantics can be introduced and developed
quickly along with extensive tests.

Parrot

Parrot is a virtual machine designed for the needs of agile, dynamic
languages. While its primary goal is to be the VM for Perl6, it has
additional goals of supporting other dynamic languages (Ruby, Python,
Scheme), and providing a set of tools for rapid design and
implementation of compilers/interpreters.

Testing

The Perl community has the largest library of Open Source modules, the
Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN). Keeping CPAN reliable across
platforms, and robust against regression, has led to a wide and
ever-growing array of testing tools, ranging from simple unit tests to
ensuring conformance to best coding practices.

Training

In addition to the usual talks, the last several YAPC's have offered 1
and 2 day classes in Perl. These are taught by some of the best trainers
in the Perl community including Damian Conway, Randal Schwartz and brian
d foy. These classes are offered to the YAPC attendees at a sizeable
discount ($200 per class for 2 days).
