Asa, I'd recommend subscribing to the perl jobs Email list at [email protected] and watching what shows up there for a while.
>From what I've seen there I'd say it matters not so much where your are working geographically, but rather what job type you're looking for. I'd define perl job four major job groups for perl that I've seen on that list with their corresponding typical language preferences in my guesstimated order of importance: 1. Web-related: perl, ruby, php, javascript, sql, html, css, xml and relations, and occasionally java and others (e.g VB, ASP, etc.) 2. linux admin/scripting: perl, c/c++, shell, and sometimes a few others 3. SQA: perl, c/c++, possibly sql, testing oriented tools, not sure about others as I don't follow these very closely 4. Large systems (e.g financial, medical, scientific, governmental, technical, etc.) : perl, c/c++, sql, python, java, occasionally Microsoft languages. HTH, Jim Eshelman ----- Original Message ----- From: "Asa Martin" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: 07/14/2010 12:33 PM Subject: [Boston.pm] Languages to learn in addition to Perl Hi everyone, Hope this isn't too off-topic, but I've relocated to the Boston area recently and am looking for a job. I've been a Perl hacker since the late 90s and consider it my first (and still favorite) language. However, I'd like to update my skillset to include some other languages. I've worked in the past using some PHP and JavaScript and have a casual knowledge of Python and Ruby. I've also done a fair about of SQL. Any suggestions from this group as to what would make sense to put effort into learning next to make myself more marketable in the Boston area? Should I try and learn Java? If so, any recommendations as to books/tutorials? What about Ruby or Python? Would those be useful together with Perl or are they usually mutually exclusive? Anything else? I don't want to start a language war as to what language is "theoretically best", but instead wondering what languages are "practically best", i.e., most often coupled (or tripled, etc.) with Perl in this area. Of course, actual job offers are welcome too ;-) Thanks in advance, Asa _______________________________________________ Boston-pm mailing list [email protected] http://mail.pm.org/mailman/listinfo/boston-pm _______________________________________________ Boston-pm mailing list [email protected] http://mail.pm.org/mailman/listinfo/boston-pm
