I like to trot out the System2 module I wrote:

  http://search.cpan.org/~reichert/System2-0.84/System2.pm

for some sorts of IPC work.  But, I think that anything System2 can
do, can can also be done by the cited modules above.

By all means, avoid the shell, if you can help it.
