Bah, humbug, Steven.

Actually, Valentines day is an ancient pagan holiday dating back a couple 
millenia in northern Europe.   Much like Christmas, which has similar roots, it 
was "embraced and extended" by Christians - and only recently by western 
consumer society.

So don't feel bad about celebrating Valentine's day.  I actually like buying 
flowers.  It's fun.   

Knowing it's origins helps me to ignore all the commercial, ahem, pressure.  
Ignore the social pressure at your own peril ... :-)
