There's one in python (Sage) for algebraic number theory that seems a bit of overkill, and Wolfram and MathWorks are a bit pricey for this limited need. Math::Matrix and its relatives on CPAN seem to be underkill, mostly focused on numerical computation w/ real-valued numeric elements. This need is for dealing with unitary and Hermitian matrices (multiplication, adjoints, determinants, etc.) in symbolic form and reducing the multi-linear equations that result to lowest terms. Seems like something that would be right up perl's alley, but so far I've come up empty. :-(
what came to my mind was maxima, a symbolic math engine which is open source. and i found some perl interface stuff for it here: http://www.scilab.in/maxima. and cpan has a couple of modules which interface to maxima.
