Please join us on Monday August 11, 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. for a public input forum on the BVSD secondary (grades 6 – 10) draft Health curriculum. We have tentatively scheduled the Monarch High School cafeteria, but will receive final confirmation next week. If you do not hear from me otherwise, it will be held at Monarch.
As you may know, the BVSD Health Education Program is in the process of updating its K-12 Health curriculum. Many of you were involved in forums last November during which you provided input on the Health education standards and benchmarks. We are now at the stage of drafting the middle level and high school grade level “essential learning results” and are once again, requesting your input. It is especially important that you provide input at this more detailed stage of the curriculum.
The standards and benchmarks adopted in spring 2003 were broad statements about the knowledge and skills we wanted our Health curriculum to address. The learning results are much more specific statements about the knowledge and skills we want to be addressed at each grade level on the topics of wellness; mental health and emotional wellness; violence awareness; substance use, abuse and addiction; human growth and development and human sexuality, diversity awareness; and injury prevention and safety. At this point, we will be addressing grade levels 6 – 10 and will begin to develop the elementary results in the fall.
The reason for holding a forum to discuss the curriculum is twofold: First, while we have worked with a variety of excellent teachers and other specialists in writing the curriculum, we want to assure that we are using language that is updated, accurate, and clear and that addresses the most important issues facing our youth. Many of you are experts in the above mentioned fields and will provide valuable feedback about the topics being addressed. Secondly, many of these issues are controversial. We believe that by holding a dialogue about these issues, we will develop a comprehensive health curriculum that will best contribute to the health, academic success and overall well-being of our students.
The draft version of the grade 6 – 10 essential learning results will be posted on the BVSD website sometime during the week of August 4 and will remain on the website for two weeks. This will be the same version available at the August 11 forum. If you would like to preview the draft before the forum, please go to: www.bvsd.k12.co.us and access the Health Education secondary curriculum framework.
If you have received this email and are not interested in further updates about the curriculum, please respond to this email and I will remove your name from the list. Also, feel free to forward this email to others who might be interested. If you have any questions, please contact me through email or by calling 303-618-9246.
Thank you and take care, Katy Fleming
