Starting on June 5th, the YWCA and Reading to End Racism will partner to begin a Race in America book club to bring together people to discuss books dealing with race and racism. This will be a great opportunity to continue some of the conversations we began at the Unlearning Racism Retreat with Lee Mun Wah and to expand to include those who were unable to attend the retreat. Discussions will be facilitated by Reading to End Racism volunteers. The first book, which will be discussed at our June 5th meeting, is the Tortilla Curtain by TC Boyle. The book club will meet the first Monday of each month at the YWCA from 5:30 - 7:00 pm and dinner will be provided.
The YWCA will also host a screening of the film Crash on May 8th at 5:30 pm at the YWCA. Winner of this year's Oscar Award for best movie, Crash is a challenging and thought-provoking film which looks at the complexities of racial tolerance in contemporary America. There will be a facilitated discussion after the screening. For people interested in the Race in America book club, this screening will also be a chance to meet other book club members before the first meeting and discussion.
