Hi Paul, This is a guess and only a guess, but I'll bet there is a problem with the pcmcia adapter as I get about the same signal strength from either the side or rear slot as well. Those things are easy to damage if you're not careful, and it only takes once.
I use the Ambicom in the slots pretty much interchangibly and from significant distances from the router too and I have no connectivity problems. Don
