I've had this happen from time to time. It seems to occur most often when I have been connected to a wireless network and go out of range without disconnecting first. This doesn't happen consistently. Sometimes I hear the "bong", but don't get any message. As alarming as it can be, I think the "real bell" is harmless, at least mostly.
