Hello Kathy:

A cookie is a small file that some websites want to leave on your computer
or BrailleNote. For reputable websites, this cookie can serve many purposes
like remembering who you are the next time you come to the site, or like in
the case of Amazon, remembering the kinds of books you like to order. Some
cookies make it possible so that you don't have to type your password each
and every time you go to that site because the cookie lets the site assume
that you are you because you are linking in from the same computer that was
there before.

Now on less reputable sites, cookies can track your computer's usage and
report back to the owner of the cookie the kinds of sites you like to go to,
your shopping preferences even from other sites and even maintain a record
of your credit card information. Sadly on today's internet, there are a lot
of cookies that are attempted to be left on your computer or BrailleNote and
most of those, you'll never know about until you go to clear them or you
have a program that tells you there being attempted. Now, all this talk
about cookies is making me hungry.

hth
Jeff
