Hi:

As silly as it seems, getting a job isn't something that most State blindness
rehab counselors help much with in the USA. They seem only to be interested in
the final resulting job. So, they often won't see a gps system as important
unless you can demonstrate that it is a part of an actual job. I would
consider how gps might effect you in employment situations. Here are some
examples:
I want to consider jobs that require me to travel between several
locations, or to travel in the city, county, state, nation or internationally.
The jobs I'm looking at require me to travel to conferences and
meetings on a regular basis.
As a member of the NFB (ACB) or other national blindness organization I
need to travel to various local, state, national, or international meetings and
this involvement assists me in forming positive employment contacts as a member
of the Office Workers, Human Service Worker, Attorney, Teacher, or whatever
division fits.

To me the work of job hunting might well benefit from having gps technology.
To be able to demonstrate that you can arrive easily at a new location easily
and without arriving distraught and exhausted by the effort seems important.
But, those people in US blindness services often don't have the idea that blind
people are actually employable so they don't like to support us with adaptive
equipment until we have the job. At that time we have to learn both new
adaptive devices and a new job at the same time -- overwhelming.

With luck you will get the equipment in time to learn to use it. However, in
any case I wish you good luck with your job search. You might try JobLine if
you are looking for a job in the USA.
