So, Jonathan, following on from that, does the mPower only work with
condenser microphones?  The manual mentions high impedance.  Is there
only low and high, or are there gradiants in the middle?  If the latter,
what should we be looking for.

I already havfe a good one which actually sits in your ears, but may not
be able to replace the small ear piece which broke last weekend;  so I'm
now beginning to look around for another.

Hi Pam, any condenser microphone requires power of some kind, so small
condenser microphones will usually have a battery in them. Dynamic
microphones don't require a battery.
