This is truly stunning and sad news.
Dr. Smith was a presenter at the NFB convention, and he was personable
and absolutely brilliant.
The world will sorely miss this innovative and productive individual and
his wife.

Subject: [Braillenote] Our Sad Loss

All, with the Internet being what it is and the news media in new
Zealand
now reporting the story, I feel I should mention here on the list that
tragically, HumanWare's Chief Executive Dr. Russell Smith and his wife
Marian have been killed in a plane crash. I'm sure the company will
place a
statement on the web site at some point, but of course right now those
of
us who knew them are deeply shocked and devastated by the news. I have
already written my own personal tribute to Russell on my blog. He is a
man
I respected deeply and like many in the company I feel his loss deeply.
I
would like to reassure you that the last thing Russell would want us to
do
is to drop the ball. Many of us are upset, but we're still here to
serve.
HumanWare is a very strong company and Russell mentored us well. Perhaps
you might like to be a little gentle with us over the next few days.
This
is in no way a formal statement, but I thought it would be appropriate
to
say something before someone finds it on the web, now that the news
media
is running the story. It is of course headline news here because Russell
was one of New Zealand's most successful businessmen. He was also one of
the most brilliant people I ever met.
