Terry,
While any kind of deep discussion about mp3 file sources would probably
get us busted by Dean Jackson, the list topic cop, it is useful to play
with some to learn the function of the media player in our note takers.
Not sure but think Jonathan Mosen has a web site that contains several to
pick from on a variety of topics. I'll give you one url I know about
below and let him update or correct my information if things have changed
since I last visited this site.
I also get many off the ACB Radio web site but so far have had to use a
computer to gather and copy them to my compact flash card because of
download file limitations on my current VoiceNote. I will be ordering a
mPowered VoiceNote next week and Jonathan said they changed the download
software on that unit to allow big file downloads. Even so, I have run
into more than a few mp3 files that refused to play. Some seem to be
recorded at sample or bit rates that aren't supported with the current
media player. Some others just refuse to run and give no error message
indicating the problem. It is just a trial and error process to find the
ones that work. Also, keep in mind that if you have a computer, you can
use software on it to rip tracks of compact discs to mp3 file format and
try playing these on your unit. In that case, if you create a mp3 file
that will not play, you can go back and experiment with other options on
the computer to adjust bit, sample, stereo-mono, etc. until you get the
best audio out of your note taker. Finally, there are web sites that sell
discs of old time radio programs in mp3 file format and I have found many
of these files play fine on my VoiceNote. I will give you a couple places
to check out below but be warned that some of these files are huge and
will take anywhere from a half hour to more than four hours to download
with a 56 K modem. Don't even try getting content from any of these sites
with your note taker unless it is one of the new mPower units.
The first is a site of Jonathan's that I have found mp3 material in the
past but haven't checked it out lately to see if still active:
mosenexplosion.com/
Next is a site run by Larry Skutchan at American Printinghouse for the
Blind where he has been uploading pod casts for the last couple months
with a variety of content. This is one that I have found some files that
don't play in my VoiceNote but most do play just fine:
www.aph.org/tech/bct.htm
This next site is run by someone who grabs the most recent copies of the
Main Menu program andprovides them as mp3 downloads far faster than they
show up in the ftp download site of the ACB Radio site:
www.horspool.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/mainmenu/
Here is a small web page containing the most recent issue of the Braille
Forum stored in four separate mp3 file tracks:
www.ptbs.org/
These last three urls are to sites that sell old time radio shows on
compact discs full of mp3 files:
www.theradiolady.com/
www.bobbysotr.com/
www.billsparks.org/
Well, that's it for now. Hope Big Dean don't bust me too bad for
questionable message content!

    Richard or Terri;
How do I define a mp3 file. Where do I get them. Can You buy them
or do I have to copy them from the internet. If so, can I download
them on my computer, to my card reader, to my BT or m power.
Thanks for any advice. this is a chalange I have not tackled yet.
