Hi Nancy and list,
The braille display in the newer M-power is significantly better than they
are in the classic BN units. One doesn't hear the clunk clunk of the
display as it changes with the newer display. This means that it should
last longer and be more mechanically sound over a period of time than the
older displays I think. My wife is diabetic and she noticed the difference
in the display immediately when I showed her my M-power after it came
in. I originally planned to upgrade my older 32 cell unit and give that to
her. That wenbt out the window when she got so excited over the newer
display. She got a newer 18 cell unit and is very happy with her unit with
the newer, sharper display. I wanted to have a head start so ordered a
newer unit so I could have us both up and running with the upgraded
features sooner rather than later when I'd receive an upgraded BN. We
really enjoy our M-power units very much!
I hope to upgrade our older units and put them on the market to recover
some of our costs thus enabling someone to get an M-power who otherwise
might not go for one. Both our older units have braille display
issues. Dots five and eight in cell 11 on my 32 cell unit won't go down
any more. This needs to be fixed. When one considers I've had my unit for
around four years before this problem developped, that is remarkable I
think! Dot two in cell one of my wife's older unit won't come up as it
should. Sometimes her entire display feels very weak and doesn't come up
right unless it is exercised. I probably won't use denatured alcohol on my
BN displays any more since it probably is hard on the BN displays. I'll
use the slightly damp cloth to clean if need be and have Humanware do the
major cleaning on the displays. The M-power has a braille display
intensity setting in the menus which make the display feel sharp or
dull. The default value is five with a possible scale of one to nine. It
will be interesting to see how this menu setting will work on the older
displays. My unit is on the default value of five.
It is your call and your budget I guess. Keep us posted on what you do! I
think you will be happy whichever way you decide to go.

Hi, folks. I sent my unit back because some cells were down and 3 days
before they called me for the implant, they sent it back. I let them know
that I didn't want to send it back so soon for the transplant, "owing I'll
be bumped from my position on the list. I know it will be expensive
having 2 units, but is it really tffue that the braille display is
significantly better inthe new units? Over time, has it continued to show
a crisp display? I have a computer and a Braille millennium 20, as well as
my Bt 18. Does anyone else have a classic and an m-power? I'm just
curious. It seems excessiv, but I consider myself an excellent Braille
reader. Besides the cost, would it make a big difference to get the new
m-power? Thanks for any info. I think Jim, Paul and others have discussed
this issue before, but I'd like to hear your opinions over time. Don
Bishop knows quite a bit about this, too, grin. Thanks.
