Let me ask you this and maybe I should have started with this question, does
this mysterious dot 4 come more than once in a document, like once after a
word or is it showing up such as when you write h. for have and it comes up
as G. as in go?
The problem I was having was this mysterious dot was at the end of a line.

Was the dot 4 showing up excessively on the display, or in the
wordprocessing? Sorry, I didn't make this very clear, but what i meant
is that random dot fours, or percent signs, were put into my files at
various intervals, not that the dot four was showing up on the display.

I had a similar problem when running ks 5. What it actually ended up to
be was the cursor.
I'd try switching your reading mode to automatic or read and see if
that doesn't take care of things.
This happened a couple of years ago so I can't remember how I fixed it,
but it was a kind of fluky thing where I hit something and it went
away.
