Tom,
Been there done that, hate the BNS. Okay, I've had this problem a long
time ago when I used paper Braille. First of all, be sure your serial
port on your Romeo isn't bad. Also make sure its connected well and not
loose. Next, check your settings on both machines. Try to let your
embosser be the default settings instead of your BN.

connection

Robert/Sarai,

First thanks for your reply.

Second, we found out that the VN mPower BT requires a special
USB-to-Parallel convert from Inside Out Networks. The cost of which is
about
$200. Humanware's web site eludes to needing a converter for parallel
connections, but never mentions the cost of it. This device is
apparently so
new, the USB port is not even shown on the pictures of it. I wonder how
much
interface testing was performed before shipping them out.

Before we buy the converter, Chris at Humanware tech support suggested
trying the serial to serial connection. Both devices were set to serial
mode
and the connect made with the cable and 9-to-25 pin adapter sent with
the
VN.

Sarai-- when we tried to emboss a test document, the VN indicated the
embossing was complete., but nothing happened, no output. We can emboss
when
we are connected to the computer via a parallel connection. We plan on
trying a IR to Parallel connection before sending the thing back for
servicing and maybe some testing.

We specifically bought this device because of the USB connectivity. It
will
be used by our 16 yr old grandson. He is in high school and must
print/emboss paper in school as well at home.

We have been ask by our Virginia chapter of the NFB to let them know how

well this device works, but if families of blind children must pay $2000
to
the device and then be told they need a $200 converter because no other
parallel device drivers were installed, it not worth using the VN BT.

Our grandson starts school 8/6 and I really don't want to go back to the

Braille & Speak 2000.

I know I sound angry and upset, but it is frustration showing, not
anger.

If you guys can shed any light on resolving the problem, it would be
greatly
appreciated.

Thanks again, and have a great holiday.

Tom

Hello,
I am wondering, if you can go from the serial of the mpower to the
serial of
the embosser, by passing the adapter and if that works, then you know
you
have a bad aadapter.
If this is not possible, then maybe and I am not sure about the romeo,
but
some embossers have settings on them that need to be set if you are
switching from a parallel to a serial and maybe this might be tried.
Lastly, If these do not work, try the adapter on another device to see
if it
is working, and eliminate the problem, by checking to see if it is an
adapter problem, cable problem or port problem.
Hope this helps.
Robert
