Dean, I know that these patches don't need our serial number, but I imagine when we get into major upgrades like version 7, we'll have to key in our serial number in order to get those; at least that's how it's been with past SMA's. I understand not putting up every little patch in the two formats, as we can and have had fellow listers send us the files. But I would think that a major upgrade could and should be made available as a .zip. Or maybe at the time of ordering the SMA or upgrade, Humanware should ask whether the customer wants to download it or have it mailed as a .zip file. There's got to be a way to meet the customers' needs and still use web space wisely and get downloads up in a timely manner.

Hello list,

Firstly, the bin file is not connected with any BrailleNote serial number.
Therefore, anyone can download this or copy it for anyone who is able to get
or has got, a key to run the upgrade.

Next, providing files in other formats does require a lot more web space,
especially when you need to keep older versions of software, manuals,
tutorials, third party applications and other aplicable information archived
online to be accessed as well. However, I will investigate whether this can
be done for the next release without dealing a blow to any existing
information or files that still need to be accessed, though this could
potentially create other risks which in turn would need to be researched.
We put the file on the site uncompressed so that people do not have to unzip
anything and for people who do not have a PC. The use of the bookshare
utility to unzip files is not officially supported by Humanware.

As someone already mentioned, the build was posted as quickly as possible,
towards the end of the day in New Zealand, in order to get the upgrade out
to people in a timely manner. We can't always provide a fix on the spot so
to speak but it so happened that Humanware was able to make this patch
available in this manner, given that it had recently been approved by our
software Verification team and Jonathan Mosen, as Product Manager.

Finally, many software companies, Microsoft to name one, provide media at
an extra charge for customers, unable to download the product. Likewise,
folk who are not able to download the KeySoft image should contact their
nearest Humanware office in order to come to a similar arangement.

Subject: [Braillenote] Upgrades and SMA's and no .zip files

Hi, all. Seeing this new build of Keysoft 6.2 put on the Humanware
website as a .bin file, with no alternative .zip file for those of us
who can'd download .bin files has me a little concerned. I purchased
a SMA a few weeks ago, choosing the download only option, because it
was more economical. So far, with the free builds to version 6.2, it
hasn't been a problem, because I can always ask that the file be sent
to me as a .zip file. But what will happen when we start getting the
regular upgrades? If Humanware is going to continue to put them up
as .bin files, I won't be able to download what I've paid for. Will
Humanware be putting up Keysoft 7.0 as a .zip file? Or will I have
to give someone on the list my serial number so they can download the
.bin file for me and send it to me? Or will I need to call the
office and change my SMA to one that comes on an SD card and pay the
extra money, just because I can't seem to download .bin files? I had
hoped this was going to be dealt with after the last patch, when Pam
and I both had problems downloading it and had to have it sent to us
as .zip files; but alas, this new build is just a .bin file. I'm
just feeling a bit disappointed at being unable to access the files
I'm entitled to, and seeing that nothing has changed in how they're
put on the website, despite lots of emails going back and forth about
this just a couple months ago.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox and continue to brainstorm about ways
to get .bin files, especially once they need to be downloaded for my
specific serial number.

Peggy
