I had the very same situation a couple of years ago. I couldn't get Active
Sync to work no matter what I did. However, I could get the BrailleNote and
the computer to work together when going in to terminal mode and the serial
port on that computer is definitely bad. I was told at that time by tech
folks at HumanWare that Active Sync can be volatile so I'm as sure as I can
be that your serial port is not quite right. I didn't chime in on this
immediately because I wasn't totally sure but I highly suspected the cause
of your problem. I had to resolve the issue in the same way you're
resolving it by getting a converter.

Hey, I'm sorry you were thinking about my weird problem at 1 in the morning.
LOL! I can't use ActiveSync on com1, but the BN does work as a synth. So,
as a remote synth is the only way I can use the BN on the serial port. I've
never seen anything like this, and it makes me think there's got to be
something wrong with the serial port on the PC. It's the only serial port
the PC has, so I'm going to try using a USB to serial converter.
