You must charge the battery before doing anything.  I don't think you have
to recalabarate the battery unless you have to.  I hope this helps

I received my M Power todat--just a feew minutes ago! When I talked with 
Kim late last week, she said that it would likely be shipped early this 
week. They sent it second-day air. Since my back-up Braille Lite 40 decided 
to go down over the weekend, I am doubly ecstatic that it has rrrived. My 
old unit apparently needs a battery.

Now I have questions:

Once I open the package, should I charge it fully before attempting to use 
it? Does it need battery recalibration before I start to use it?

I will not do anything with it until it reaches room temperature.
