One advantage to reformatting would be to use a different file alocation method that would result in the card being able to hold more data, but you would need to make sure that the device that you are using the card with would support that file alocation method. For example, you could increase the capacity of a card by formatting to FAT 32 or NTSF, but the card may not work in the Braillenote, play MP3's, etc.
