So, not doing what you are told actually worked out for the best.
I foolishly believed them when they said you had to have the patch to
use the GPS with Keysoft 7.
Perhaps I should try installing the GPS from scratch, but I'll wait a
day or two before making an even bigger mess of things.

I am happy to say, and let's face it, a little smug, that my
gpswithout any additional adjustment, appears to be working
perfectly on my upgraded pk. Perhaps somewhat foolishly, but in the
name of research, I tried a c 3-dreset, and later, a c 1-4
close-down procedure, but failed to disturb the gps program; it
appears to be reliably installed. Why I should be so lucky, I just
can't imagine, but I am indeed very grateful.
