Hello J.D. No, you are not ignorant, we may not have been clear enough in our explanation.
Many of us track our checking accounts on our PC's, either online or through our banks using Quicken. We're given something that is very similar to a spread sheet that we can enter our checking transactions into. It will keep track of our balance and as long as we remember to enter the info, can keep us from getting into trouble. Many banks like the one I use (Wells Fargo) then offer a way to compare our entries to their transactions giving us a way to balance our checkbooks without sighted assistance. While there is a way to print checks from many of these programs like Microsoft Money or Quicken, you are very correct in that it requires special printer stock (Either continuous feed checks or laser/inkjet checks) or a special printer and special checks. Thus far in the time I've been using online banking, I've rarely ever had to write a check because my bank allows me to set up venders like my electric company, telephone company and credit cards and send them money electronically. The electronic transactions get assigned a regular check number and work just like a regular check only there's no mailing or hand writing involved. You simply enter the date, vender, amount and tell it to send. You then upload those transactions to the bank for processing. I think we are all hoping for some sort of similar checking transaction tracking program for the BrailleNote family. Though I doubt they'd ever get as fancy as quicken or MS Money, just having the convenience on our BrailleNotes or MPowers would be great.
